With the success of the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, last year, it’s no surprise that there’s another film about a hugely successful and popular rap artist on the horizon. This time, the focus is on uber-popular West Coast artist, Tupac Shakur, in All Eyez on Me.
With Straight Outta Compton, a lot of the buzz was around Ice Cube and Dr. Dre being heavily involved in the production. Even Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr. starred as his own father in what was his feature film debut. A number of familiar names and faces were among the cast and crew who all contributed to the success of the film.
With All Eyez on Me, however, the majority of the people involved are mostly unknowns. The most known actors in the film are Danai Gurira and Lauren Cohan of The Walking Dead fame. Just like in Compton with Jackson, a first time film actor, Demetrius Shipp Jr., will be playing Tupac and wow. He looks just like him in the trailer. Oddly enough though, neither the writers, Ed Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft, or the director, Benny Boom, have any reputable films on their respective resumes. Not that that matters entirely but it will be interesting to see how they do with this film. If it has anywhere near the promotion that Straight Outta Compton had, it could be a sleeper hit this year.
Overall, the trailer does a good job of hyping up the first glimpse of Shipp as Tupac. Of course, a biopic on him is definitely a subject of interest due to his controversies. Hopefully, the filmmakers can translate what is sure to be a good level of hype into a quality film. All Eyez on Me is set for release on November 11th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
