Just like that, we have a new one to throw on our most anticipated films of 2017 list. It has only been three years since Darren Aronofsky has released a new film but it feels like forever. The first trailer for his upcoming horror/drama, Mother!, has been released and it looks pretty awesome.
The last time Aronofsky released something new was 2014’s Noah. That film was polarizing for audiences and critics alike. It also strayed from Aronofsky’s usual style. Normally, he focuses on realistic people and scenarios with a splash of the surreal. His new film, Mother!, looks to be no different.
The plot centers around a couple, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests begin to arrive at their home. The film also stars Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer as two of the eerie guests. It also appears that Bardem’s character relishes in his supposed popularity despite the effects on Lawrence’s character.
Like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan before it, Mother! looks to be another film with a character who’s psychologically tortured by the events around her. It kind of seems like a mix between 2003’s The Others and this year’s The Beguiled in terms of substance and style. Also, it’s slightly reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s 1965 psychological drama, Repulsion as you see the house change in the trailer. Either way, the film looks like a return to form for Aronofsky and is sure to be a tense moviegoing experience.
Mother! is set for release on September 15th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
