Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Teaser Released

Thus far, it has been five long years since the release of the last Pirates of the Caribbean film. Last night, the world received its first taste of the long awaited next installment of the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The series has always been unfairly criticized since the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Yes, it is universally accepted as the best in the franchise but all four of the films have been entertaining in their own right. Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End weren’t standalone films like their predecessor but they were solid companion pieces. They furthered the story of the first film and capped it off in epic piratey fashion. The standalone sequel, On Stranger Tides, introduced new characters and plot devices as Captain Jack Sparrow set off to find the Fountain of Youth. It felt somewhat smaller in scale to the other films but was still a fun expansion to the series.

On May 26th, 2017, Dead Men Tell No Tales will finally be released. This time, Sparrow is searching for the trident of Poseidon and is being hunted by the sinister Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). There isn’t much happening in the teaser but it establishes the mood and highlights the villain. Bardem received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men back in 2008. He also received a nomination for Best Actor for the film, Biutiful. His inclusion alone makes it easy to get excited for this new sequel.

Returning to the series are, of course, Johnny Depp as Sparrow, the criminally underrated Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Note that the character of Turner was not in On Stranger Tides but he should be a welcome return for the series. Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg take over directorial duties from Rob Marshall for this film.

Again, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will release in May 2017. Check out the teaser and comment below.
