Alien: Covenant Trailer Released

If there’s one thing about Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise, it’s that nothing’s for sure. It has been going on five years since the release of Prometheus; Scott’s standalone prequel set in the Alien universe but not actually about the Xenomorphs. Now, Spring 2017 will see the release of Prometheus 2/Alien 5 with Alien: Covenant.

If that sounds confusing, it should. After Scott was quoted saying that there would be at least one sequel to the prequel before connecting to the original franchise, it appears that that has been thrown to the wayside. It’s no secret that Prometheus, despite massive amounts of hype, underwhelmed critics and fans. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Scott decided to make the connection to Alien sooner rather than later.

Covenant will see the return of Michael Fassbender as the android, David. The colony ship, Covenant, discovers what they believe to be an uncharted paradise. David is the sole inhabitant following the events of Prometheus. Of course, the location is not paradise and things turn deadly as the H.R. Giger designed alien makes a return to the big screen.

While people were disappointed with Prometheus, it appears that the filmmakers are trying to right their wrong by featuring the aliens prominently in this first trailer. It’s also pretty gory for being the very first look at the film. Nonetheless, it’s great to see the series potentially get back on track. It has been a long time since a good Alien film hit theaters. Alien 3 (1992) had a ton of production problems and Alien: Resurrection (1997) received mixed reviews. This leaves James Cameron’s acclaimed Aliens as the last successful romp with the creatures back in 1986.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19th, 2017. Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce are also set to reprise their roles from Prometheus. The new cast includes Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Billy Crudup. Check out the first trailer and comment below.
