Song to Song Trailer Released

For such a legendary name in filmmaking, Terence Malick certainly doesn’t generate a ton of buzz before he’s set to release new films. As per usual, this is the case with his new directorial effort, Song to Song, which has received its first trailer.

Despite getting his start in the director’s chair back in the early 1970’s, Malick has only released eight feature films thus far. Song to Song will be his ninth. Malick has been responsible for films like BadlandsThe Thin Red Line, and The Tree of Life. Most of his other work, though, has flown under the radar to the general public.

This new film appears as if it will continue the same trends seen in many of Malick’s recent work. The trailer shows an interwoven, character driven story, sweeping steadicam shots, and crisp cinematography. These have all been staples of films like 2015’s Knight of Cups and the aforementioned The Tree of Life. The story follows two entangled couples through the music scene in Austin, Texas. Not only does the film star Cinema Smack favorite Michael Fassbender but also Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, and the overrated Rooney Mara. Also, a ton of recognizable faces should be sprinkled in throughout the film including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benicio del Toro, Val Kilmer, Holly Hunter, and a handful of musicians including Iggy Pop who can be seen briefly in the trailer.

Terence Malick films aren’t usually for everyone but they’re most certainly emotional and visual spectacles. Song to Song hits theaters on March 17th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
