As has been the case over the past decade or so, we can add another upcoming western remake to the list. The first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s new film, The Beguiled, has dropped. Lucky for us, it also looks really good.
The film stars Colin Farrell as a Confederate soldier who’s injured and taken to an all-girl boarding school. He seduces a number of the women one by one until they begin to turn on each other and, eventually, on him. Also starring in the film are Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Angourie Rice. Adapted from A Painted Devil, a 1966 novel by Thomas Cullinan, The Beguiled was already released as a feature film starring Clint Eastwood back in 1971. It was released before Eastwood’s turn in Dirty Harry and was poorly marketed which led to it being a flop. Though, it has established an audience in years since.
Sofia Coppola, daughter of The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, has proven herself as a capable filmmaker in the past. She has received favorable reviews on films like The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, and, of course, Lost in Translation. With an overall solid track record, there’s no reason to think that The Beguiled will be any less. From the look of the trailer, it looks to be a dark and disturbing, yet stylish, thriller.
The Beguiled opens in theaters on June 30th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
